Ahem ... let me give this a try.
Khilwat is solitude.
Solitude is the state where you are not sharing your experience with others.
Now let us consider the state of a young man who has got a job some time back and the parents are going to take him to see a girl - his prospective bride.
At the moment the gentleman is in his office but the outing is scheduled for the evening.
In the office the guy is attending meetings and devising solutions and interacting with all the other office people but in his heart he is just occupied with the prospects of the evening - how will it go and what will happen.
So the person is in the public but the heart is dedicated some where else.
I suppose it is not impossible to imagine.
Attaining the same state in relation to Allah(SWT) might take some efforts and in all probability will require a Shaikh but it is not impossible to achieve.
And it is desirable because Allah(SWT) says that if you forget me even for a moment I'll make your life miserable.
And if it is still too intricate for us then let us just remember that our mandate is rather simple - to avoid sins and indulge in acts of obedience.
Wassalam
