I don't understand... what did you want me to see? The quote still suggests that man is the next stage up from apes: " The higher stage of man is reached from the world of monkeys,".

Asalam o Alaikum, I think by this he meant that every human being improves from lower moral standard to a higher moral and intellectual standard with the passage of time according to the resources and environment given to him and created by him. In the Quran it is mentioned that Allah punished rebellious nations by converting them to monkeys and pigs. It is a possibility that Ibn e Khaldun while observing this example was metaphorically saying that a man's lower status is like animals(monkeys because they resemble humans the most among all of the other animals) and he improves to higher moral values and become a true human being through struggle and better envirnment. It can also mean that life of the ancient was simple as life of the animals is simple. They only know to hunt and eat and sleep. This is what man of the caves and jungle did. But as time progresses, civilization progresses and life becomes complicated. So evolution mentioned by him is in this sense in a human's behavior instead of his/her physical traits as Darwin suggests otherwise.
