That is partially correct. Actually the Banu Qurayza chose a certain Sahaba who used to follow the jewish religion and was now a Muslim to choose their punishment. (I forget the Sahaba's name atm). They thought by choosing him, he would be lenient towards them. However, he chose the punishment from their very own religion, ie executing the men and enslaving the women and children.
