Abu Huraiyra radiaAllahu anhu reported Allah's Messenger Sal Alllahu alaihi wasallam saying: (You are living) in a blessed age that he who abandons even 1/10 of what he is prescribed, courts destruction, after this there will come a time when he who observes 1/10 of what is now prescribed will be saved." (Tirmidhi) The hadith clearly does not refer to Fard or wajib acs of worship, as one who leaves them out courts destruction, regardless of the age he lives in.

The hadith applies to the responsibility of inviting towards good and forbidding from evil.
Due to the strong levels of Iman and the conducive dini enviroment of the time of the Sahabah , had they neglected even part of this responsibility, they would have been destroyed.

On the other hand, in times of evil and misconduct, fulfilling a portion of this responsibility would be sufficient to save one.

If I am not mistaken, similar commentary is mentioned in al-Mirqat of Mulla Ali al-Qari.
