I think, any Muslim man or woman willing to go for higher education should contact a reliable Mufti . Because, many colleges and universities do not teach in an Islamically approved manner. Many of these educational insititutes are co-educational and no pardah are maintained.
However, under some special conditions , boys are allowed to attend those co-educational universities. But, for a female student , the conditions
are very very strict. So, every student should contact a good Mufti and know the conditions . Otherwise, a door of big fitnah will open.

This website below is a reliable one . Some relevant questions and ansers you find in the links below.

Are women allowed education upto degree level?

Is it permitted for a young (Muslim) female to go to university in a non-Islamic country, to become a doctor ....

Second that, also how does the sister in question is going to fulfill the mahram requirement for "travel" and The fees for study has gone upto £9,000 per year, best not to fund this with student loan as that is haram money. isn't it going to be a big burden on the family, also careers like engineering seem to have a lot of males, would the future husband be happy with that.

One of the responders said she need to find a husband who gives her space. What does that mean? that's not very islamic. A woman's place in islam is in the home UNLESS she is needed with regards to women's needs which men aren't allowed to carry out e.g. doctors, nurses etc...

we shouldn't try to imitate the kuffar. Especially the muslim women trying to imitate the kuffar woman. Kuffar women are oppressed thats why they go out to work, we cherish our women and pamper them in the home. alhumdulillah
