Regarding spitting on the left, just so there's no confusion, I believe it is spit *dryly* to the left 3 times. As in, do the motion and sound of spitting towards your left 3 times, but not actually have any spit come out of your mouth. Do it dry.

Don't want brothers and sisters spitting all over their beds.

Please correct me if I am wrong.
