On this topic, has anyone read Shaykh Akram Nadwi's book al-Muhaddithat?

Yeah, it's pretty good. I heard him give a talk on the subject too, was even better (he's an excellent speaker

). The book is just an introduction to his work on the subject in arabic though. I think it runs to 40 volumes with 8000 biographies in there. The introduction he has written is just a few examples of different scholars from different era's, known for different things

Btw, does anyone know where to get the urdu hardcopy edition of the book mentioned in the OP?
