Bismillah
Few years ago Mufti taqi was with some other arab scholar. The arab scholar asked him to lead salat which he did but when the organiser told him to do asar together. He declined.
Another incident Mufti Taqi was at regents park masjed with many of the hanafi scholars. When asar adhan was called some hanafi scholar intially thought of abstaining from Jammah. Mufti Taqi told them to perform the Asar according to Masjed time.
----------------------
Here what I do.
If I have performed my Dhur early, I joined in the Jammah but if late, I abstain from joining the Jammah if not in masjed but in small musalla. If one feel by abstaing some ignorant individual is going to make issue, then perform as Nawafil. Sahaba didnt join in when traveling and they had no no problem with it. So none should have problem with these things. I would urge our shafi brothers not to tap on others shoulder when one sees performing salat individually standing on one side more so if you see them performing their salat in hanafi menthod
I am in Riyadh and have seen adhan being called out at Hanafi time for Asar and occaionaly in UAE as well.

Allahualam

The Islamic Centre in Liverpool prays according to the Shafi'i Asr time, too. I rarely go for jama'ah (I hope to start going to the mosque more often this year, insha'Allah) but I tend to vary it. If I know I'm going to be out at, say, 2:10pm when it is the start of Shafi'i Asr, I will pray Dhuhr "early". I mostly follow Hanafi timings unless I go to the mosque, but to be honest, it depends on my schedule. If I'm in class or something at, say, 2:10pm, I will pray Asr based on Hanafi rulings instead. But if I attend jama'ah at the mosque, I will pray Dhuhr earlier and follow Shafi'i times, so I can pray with the congregation.

Both timings are correct according to scholars, so I guess it doesn't really matter which one you choose. On my prayer sheet I have the standard rulings and then write down the Hanafi time in brackets underneath it, so I don't get confused.
