I was re-reading this thread and saw the last post. I don't see anything wrong with keeping pets even if they don't have any use. Like, I have a cat which I had for the last 4.5 years. Sure, she keeps the mice/rats/lizards away, but that wasn't the reason I got her; I got her for companionship.
As for birds in cages, if they weren't free roaming birds, I also don't see anything wrong with keeping them, especially since they were born in captivity, as long as the cage is big enough and the bird is being provided with fresh food and water. Same opinion I have with fish. Visiting the zoo isn't feasible for everyone lol, and you don't get to feed a normal tabby cat in the zoo or hold it in your arms and hear it purr.
Money can be spent in better ways, sure, but I like to see this as a way as earning some thawaab as well, since I'm feeding creatures of Allah. Besides, in a hot place like where I'm living, you don't even have to spend that much, unless you have to hand feed bunch of abandoned kittens, hehe. (I'm still reading Yaseen and hoping mummy cat will come back!) I could have always given them to SPCA, where they would be put down.
I am hoping perhaps Allah will bless me for looking after the pets I have.
