I also have a pet fish.
I was in an assumption that i am providing everything which fish needs however when i did some research in fish care field i discover that no one but Allah only can suffice what they need hence i would rather not consider keeping pet fish as a good idea. As we live in a Atmosphere surrounded by air, Where in fish are surrounded by water so unless we have sufficient equipment's to keep the water condition unpolluted we can have fish.
However its illogical to spent a huge amount of money for mimicking nature.
Assume that you have been locked up in a room where in there is no room for outer atmosphere to getting in and you have to answer all your nature’s call in there, you will die with ammonia and the same happens with fish.
So please do some study and i am sure that You will find that its haram to keep fish as a pet in tank as we can never be able to suffice fish requirements as Allah does.
Following are the Hadith Which focuses on Fulling the requirement.
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 3.553 Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar
Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "A woman was tortured and was put in Hell because of a cat which she had kept locked till it died of hunger."
Sahih Muslim Hadith 6638A Narrated by Abu Hurayrah
Allah's Messenger (saws) said: ‘A woman was thrown into Hell-Fire because of a cat whom she had tied and did not provide it with food, nor did she set it free to eat insects of the earth until it died inch by inch.’
