لا يجوز عمل التماثيل على صورة الإنسان أو شيء من الحيوان ولا استعمالها في شيء أصلا والمحرم من ذلك بالإجماع ما له قائم على صفة ما يحيى من الحيوان وما سوى ذلك من الرسوم في الحيطان أو الرقوم في الستور والبسط والوسائد ففيه أربعة أقوال المنع والجواز والكراهة واختصاص الجواز بما يمتهن كالبسط بخلاف الستور والمعلقة ويباح لعب الجواري بالصور الناقصة غير التامة الخلقة كالعظام التي ترسم فيها وجوه وقال أصبغ الذي يباح ما يسرع إليه البلى

in al-Qawanin al-Fiqhhiyyah it states:

It is the popular opinion in the Maliki school to differentiate between 2-D images of animate life which are placed up high on the wall and such images which are placed in places which are trampled upon (e.g. rugs) or sat on (e.g. sofa or pillow.) It is makruh to place such images in a position of respect such as on the wall for display and it is mubah to use such 2-D images in places which are trampled upon, sat on or not very prominent. (al-Qawanin al-Fiqhhiyyah: Kitab al-Jami `akhaaam ad-dawwad wa al-tasweer.)

This was posted on the Maliki fiqh group site on yahoo and I believe OmarHH did the translation. I can't seem to scan the Arabic from the copy I have but the translation is not literal but the meaning is sound.
