The Qur'aan states with regards to the soul:

And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And mankind have not been given of knowledge except a little."

Like one of the members have mentioned Kitubur Ruh by Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah will be a good read.
I have read the abridged version of this book called; The Soul's Journey After Death, which addresses what is being discussed in this thread.
