wa alaikum assalam to the OP,

Welcome to the forum and (hopefully) to islam. I maintain a list of resources that are helpful to converts that you may be interested in. If you happen to be in the twin cities, minnesota, I can provide you with some in person help as well. And if not, perhaps we could find someone in your city to help.

Are there any masjids in your area that were associated with WD Muhammad? I think that might be the perfect way to transition into mainstream islam. I'm a european american convert (aka white girl from the sticks), and I've never felt more at home than I have at a former NOI temple. Many of our adult members began their lives in the nation, and transitioned to sunni islam with WD Muhammad in the 70s. They're been there, done that, so to say, and could inshaAllah provide you some comfort and guidance in your spiritual search.

I also think that many mainstream american muslims would welcome you with open arms if you tell them your story. If there's one thing muslims love, it's a good convert story, and my sister, that is just what you have To find your way to the truth and light of Islam is your opening into any muslim community.
