i met many people in america who used to be NOI and later became muslims. they said that when the joined NOI they thought they were actually becoming muslims and did not know any better.

so its a lacking on our part that they were not shown the true islam.

That's exactly what happened to me. When I was in college I read the Quran and wanted to be a muslim, but the only "muslims" around were the Nation. So I joined and it took me about 6-7 years before I was guided to Islam.
