I often hear of Mashaykh who have some pretty negative things to say about the murids that leave them
Bayat can not be taken lightly, still in religion it is only Mustahab, neither Farz nor wajib.
There can be many reason for breaking this relationship:
1) You did bayat but later on found out that the aqaed of the Shaikh were not correct; Breaking such a bayat is necessary
2) You found out that you have no munasibat with the Shaikh and therefore you can not benefit from him;In such cases it is better to find another shaikh for yourself,as the purpose of Bayat is to learn how to please Allah swt,Shaikh per se is not the objective of Bayat
3)You stayed with a Shaikh for a considerable amount of time, and still you can,t find any positive change in yourself (provided you have followed his instructions ),in such cases you can leave this Shaikh, but you must respect him all your life.
4)You are bayat to a Shaikh but for some reason you can not communicate with him for long periods of time,in such cases it is better to find a Shaikh close to you or more easily contactable. In General,if you can not communicate with your Shaikh for longer than 3 months in a row, even by mail, that will technically mean he is not contactable in your case.
There may be other reasons too,if one is honest to himself and is not in habit of breaking bayat and doing it again with a new shaikh,he can easily assess his situation and make a decision.
If bayat is broken for valid reasons,no harm will come, otherwise at least in the path of sulook this person will be unsuccessful (illa MashaAllah). It is not a sin of any degree in itself though, such an aqeeda is 'Mubalegha fid din'
It is better to inform the shaikh in a very humble way,but if one does not inform him for any good reason, that is right too,in any case one should keep his respect in mind and never speak against him
