Mufti Abdullah Nana (a user on this forum) from Bay Area appears to be an expert in Halal foods in the US.

If I remember correctly, he warned us against eating halal-labeled chicken and beef from Halal Depot, the chicken because it is machine slaughtered, and the beef because it is not slaughtered properly. This was about 18 months ago, however, so things may have changed.

As for al-Safa, a lot of Muslims seem to trust it, but he also warned me of their shady business practices (they only allow inspection of certain facilities), so that may be a problem area as well.
