I thought that ayah was referring to dust from the ground because at that time it was not carpeted/paved.
That view actually does exist; it is attributed to Sa'id ibn Jubayr and 'Ikrimah.
Abu al-'Aliyah said, "They prostrate on earth, not on cloth."

Some of the varying opinions regarding the meaning of this verse:

- Nur and whiteness on their faces on the Day of Judgment, through which it will be known that the prayed during their lifetimes.
- Their appearance will be marked with beauty, reverence, and humility as a result of their devotion to prayers.
- Yellowness in their faces as a result of spending the night awake.
- Appearing ill, when in fact they are not.
- The remnants/mark of dust on their forehead due to prostrating on earth.

Ref: Ma'alim al-Tanzil of al-Baghawi

After scanning different tafasir, it seems that the first two seem to be the most prevalent opinions.
