It is stated in al-Hidaya (Hanafi): "A person offering supererogatory prayers may offer them following one who is offering obligatory (Fard) prayers." (because the need in his case is for basic salaah (that can be offered with an unqualified niyyah (intention)) and this is found in the case of the Imam (who is offering basic salaah and obligation in addition), thus, the construction is valid.)

And al-Fiqh al-Islam (Hanafi): "..while the person doing a nafl may stand behind the one doing a fard." (volume 1, page 154)
