Ya Aba Marwan, it's not overcomplicating things. This is how each of the three 'aqidah schools were known, throughout history. They certainly represent different strains of thought: most of the 'aqidah wars of the past has been between the atharis/some hanbalis/salafis vs. ash'aris/maturidis/ahl al-kalam vs. mu'tazilah/falaasifah.
