when they say salafis are a minority, i think they count the whole muslim population, whether they are practising or not, the truth is about 90% of these muslims won't even know what an ashari is!

nO, hE IS CLEARLY COUNTING THE uLEMA AND MADARIS OF THE UMMAH AND SURELY THE NON-SALAFIS ARE AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY and that only counts!.
