I wonder what the locals said when the Ottomans were building in Makkah? Maybe much the same thing?

As far as I know, the Ottomans never built skyskrapers; they even had a policy of not allowing the building of any building higher than the Ka'bah, or something similar to this.

In another thread, Colonel_Hardstone wrote:
When Ottomans extended the Masjid of Rasul-ullah (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) they had the brick factory setup miles away and everyone who particpated in the project was a Hafidh of Qur'aan.

When Ottomans extended railway line close to the Masjid of Rasul-ullah (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) they had tons upon tons of cotton and sound-proofing material buried under the tracks to STOP the noise from disturbing the surrounds of Madinah.

When General Anwar Pasha reached Madinah after the rebellion of Shareef and family of Saud he walked bare feet in hot baking sun and refused to wear shoes and said his Salam upon the Prophet (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam)'s grave and Shaykh (Maulana) Zakariyya (RA) has described this in his books.

I am a witness to Ulama in Pakistan building small Musallas in their villages and forcing everybody to do Wudhu and ensuring that every single penny is HALAL and everybody participating is a man of Taqwa. Not once, not twice many times I have heard and seen this in Pakistan. In fact it is almost an accepted practise to this day in Pakistan (in villages) for people to do Wudhu and pray when they set the foundations of a Mosque.

Saudi ignoramouses have no concept and understanding of Adab like this because they are ignorant desert Bedouins.
