A US soldier has been jailed for seven years for his part in the ‘thrill killings’ of Afghan civilians last year. Andrew Holmes, 21, was allegedly among a group of US soldiers who opened fire on three people while on patrol in Kandahar.

Holmes entered a guilty plea to charges of committing murder by an inherently dangerous act, and possessing a finger bone from a victim. He allegedly fired a machine gun at a boy who was just 15ft away at the time.

Prosecutors say that some of the soldiers kept body parts from their victims as trophies. Andrew Holmes is expected to receive a dishonourable discharge from the US Army and will forfeit his army pay. The soldiers, from Seattle’s Joint Base Lewis-McChord, were arrested in Afghanistan last year after the alleged killings.

He got only 7 years.
