is it haram to download movies from the internet or software evan though its under copyright laws for exampl downloading a copy of windows 7 because i dont want to pay 200 american dollers for a copy of windows 7

I know people will disagree with me, but personally I don't see how it is haram. "Pirating" is in reality simply receiving data files (video, audio, etc) from other people. Other people who have the media give it to you. If "pirating" is haram, then having your friend lend you a movie, CD, book, or video game to you would be equally haram. I fail to see how you can own an image, a sound, or a thought. Allah
