I will present my shaikhs stance on it. but in gist is, that it is haram to impinge upon another's rizq. there have been shuyookhs who have written books and used the publication as means of rizq. This has allowed them to teach for free ( which will align with a lot of people here saying that deen should be free). If you went out and mass copied those books, you will be causing darr (harm) to them.

So the question comes down to software ( lets leave movies etc aside). If the company makes money from providing services to consumers and business ( this is how a lot of open source companies work). They give the actual software for free. However if the selling of the software is the main means of revenue, then I feel one should not impinge upon their means of rizq.

e.g. brother wanted me to give him a copy of the quran app that I had, so he can use it for his hifz. If I gave it to him, would I not be cutting into the sales of the small muslim software joint. Now that he had to buy it.

The article is below and it even mentions that one can copy it for personal use (backup copy) if he has bought the original.

Use linux, you will build better skills than windoze.
If you have to use windows, buy it with a computer or get an oem version if you can assemble your own desktop.
