I remember Shaykh Hamza Yusuf telling a story about a Muslim scholar (forget his name sorry) meeting the Byzantine Emperor. The Emperor got very annoyed that the Scholar did not bow when he met him, he asked him why? The scholar stated because he was a Muslim, he only bowed to Allah swt. So the next day the Emperor in a bid to humiliate the scholar built an arch leading into his throne room which the scholar would have to bow under to get into the room.
So do you know what our scholar did?
He went into the room, bowed.
