Honestly, it depends on which madhab you folllow. In the Maliki madhab, the beard is sunnah mukhaddah and hence it's highly recommended, but not required. You'll find pious Maliki sheikhs who either don't have a beard or have a goatee-mustache combination. So, really it's not a unanimous thing, is all I'm saying...

Yes I agree with you, the issue is not as clear cut as some would like to make it, as with many things. As the brother says he is following the hanafiyya, the beard is held to be very important.

To myself and everyone else:
One thing we can all agree on is that to have kibr is completely haram. So before this thread that is by all intents and purposes finished, turns into a beard battle ground, let us worry about clear cut issues and spend our time on them, rather than such topics that scholars have ikhtilaaf on. Our time is worth more. Just my advice to myself.
