That hadith is referenced at the start of Imam Ghazali's Ihya Ulum ud-din. To give it some context, regardless of strength. Al-Ghazali implied that was because of whatever little Muslims knew in the early days, they enacted. I.e they may not have had much info, but whatever they did, they did 100%. They all prayed, gave zakat etc. Now people have access to so much islamic info, thousands and thousands of pages of guidelines dictating the minutiae of their lives, yet the vast majority do not enact anything close to 100% of what they know. Allah Knows Best.
I'm writing this only to give Ghazali's interpretation of that Hadith. if someone can find the exact citation it would be great, its in the opening chapter, 'acquisition of knowledge', somewhere in the first 70 pages, i'm struggling to find it myself at the moment unfortunately so i am unable to quote it verbatim.
