As the last 10 days of Ramadan have begun, there are a number of brothers and sisters who are devoting the final part of Ramadan purely to the worship of Allah. Which is great, mash’Allah - it’s the month of blessings and you get extra reward for any act of worship.

What mustn’t be forgotten though, is that Islam is a priority based religion. And the Ummah is under attack - in addition to the on-going atrocities that we have become accustomed to hearing about and seeing: Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Kashmir… the attacks on Palestinians have been increased since last week and Islamophobia in Britain continues to increase.

In such turbulent and difficult times, how many Muslims can actually justify taking time out for themselves to ‘become closer to Allah’ through additional prayers, when the priority of defending themselves, their families and the Ummah as a whole hasn’t been met? We know that if we were praying while a child drowned in front of us and we didn’t break off our prayers to save that child then we would be sinful.

Those Muslims who don’t lift a finger, or even utter a word against the injustices and oppression we are facing, and then think that by ‘praying’ their responsibilities as a Muslim have been met, haven’t understood the essence of Islam.

I am not saying that we aren’t allowed to take time out for extra worship, but we all need to think about whether this extra worship is of any benefit to us or to the Ummah if we ignore the fard obligation of defending the oppressed. Innocents are being slain – which is more important, to fight for them or only to sit and pray? Attacks on our right to practice Islam in Britain have become acceptable – which is more important, to fight for our rights and defend Islam, or just to sit and pray some more?

Allah has given us all the intelligence to understand what our priorities should be. It’s up to us to use this blessed month and to think and reflect if you are truly doing justice yourself and the Ummah.

“Then fight in the cause of Allah, and know that Allah heareth and knoweth all things.” (Quran: 2:244)

“None of you is a believer until he wishes for his brother what he likes for himself.” (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
