Bid'ah doesn't mean "innovation," it means anything that goes against the Deen, the interpretation of the ahadeeth has been lost within the translation

Anything that goes against the Deen is considered Bid'ah. And Bid'ah is either evil in itself or permissible without rewarding. When someone says "It's Bid'ah" generally it's saying that it goes against Islaam
