Salamu alaikum wr wb

When praying, after al Fatiha, how should the second surah be read? for example if you recite al-Qalam or any other surah after al Fatiha, must you read the entire surah even if its not a short one? or can you, for example, recite part of al-Baqarah or a few ayats from a surah instead of the whole surah. If you can recite just part of a surah, is there a minimum number of ayats that you have to recite, or can you recite any number, like if you just recite ayatul kursi?
