I read somewhere in either Bukhari or Muslim that Syedna RasulUllah said sometime around the conquest of Mecca (or was it Hunayn?) something to the effect that "do not trouble me about my Sahaba", meaning thereby the old companions (who had been with him at least before the Battle of Ditch or perhaps at Hudaybia?). Does this mean that Sahaba in the real sense were the older companions who had been with the Prophet in difficult times? (May God forgive me if I am wrong in what amounts to nothing more than a stray reflection on the said Hadith)
Salaam brother

On 20th of Feb, 2011 you started this thread "Were 'Sahaba' only the companions of difficult time? but i am sure you were not provided by straight answers since then. My reply to you is who the sahaba r.a, Allah has define clearly in Quran Majeed as follows

[Translation by Abdullah Yousuf Ali]‎ Muhammad is the messenger of Allah; and those who are with him are strong against Unbelievers, (but) compassionate amongst each other. Thou wilt see them bow and prostrate themselves (in prayer), seeking Grace from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure. On their faces are their marks, (being) the traces of their prostration. This is their similitude in the Taurat; and their similitude in the Gospel is: like a seed which sends forth its blade, then makes it strong; it then becomes thick, and it stands on its own stem, (filling) the sowers with wonder and delight. As a result, it fills the Unbelievers with rage at them. Allah has promised those among them who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness, and a great Reward.
Quran Sura Fateh, the verse number 29
Now " of difficult time" or "non difficult" time is out context for Sahaba r.a, therefore Sahaba are not only taken by looking into what time they were with prophet s.a.w but whom Quran is calling Sahaba and they are

1- strong against unbeliever.
2-compassionate amongst each other.
3-Thou wilt see them bow and prostrate themselves (in prayer), seeking Grace from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure.
4-On their faces are their marks, (being) the traces of their prostration.,
