Few points:
- who has been nicer to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) than his uncle Abu Talib? He has been by his side all through his life, but did not accept Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) tells us that his uncle would be among the residents of jahannam. This clarifies that good deed alone is not sufficient for eternal salvation; they bring goodness in this world for the person, but does not leave anything for the hereafter - which is indeed the true life.
- if a person believes in Allaah, then he must also believe in the Qur'an, and the Qur'an tells us of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and asks us to follow him. So if a person accepts Allaah, but does not accept Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), then they are basically rejecting Allaah's book and his commands; this is kufr/rejection, and thus the person does not remain Muslim.
Wallaahu A'lam.
