How do you determine what is true from among the different sects? Who is right?

The hallmark of falsehood is inconsistency, be it in terms of application of principles or any other terms which may come to light upon looking through the opinions of any one group of people, whether they separate themselves from the main group or not. Allah says (interpretation) "Had it been from other than Allah, they would have found much inconsistency within it." (An-Nisa 82)
