i'm curious about this issue with relation to Mullah Zaeef's book "My life with the taliban". In it he says the Chinese ambassador asked whether they would interfere with the situation of muslims in China i.e those wanting independence etc, to which Mullah Zaeef answered that what happens in another country is their business.

I didn't think that would be their answer or was that an act of diplomacy on the part of a fledgling nation i.e The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan?

I hadn't heard of this. But I have heard that various Islamic groups in Afghanistan were being pressured to accept nationalist boundaries for their struggle in exchange for more recognition, thereby protecting neighboring nations and the balance of power in the region.
Afghan Muslims have to liberate themselves from foreign occupation. They aren't in any position to deal with China. In contrast, Muslims regimes like the Saudis, Khaleejis, Algeria, etc have basically been silent towards China's treatment of Muslims therein.

And that comes to point of how committed are Muslims to carrying Islam. China is indeed oppressing Muslims within China.
