salaams -

can anyone tell me is there a special way that you meditate (without any shaykh to guide you) or do you just sit and remember Allah anyway you want? Also, is it a good idea for everyone to meditate? and for how long?

jazakallah
Typically in a genuine Sufi order , a novice is not advised to do meditation ( Muraqaba ). After passing
several steps of spiritual exercises ( including various types of zikr in special formats ) when a mureed (seeker) has got enough spiritual purification, then he is allowed to do meditation.

I think , before meditation , the shaykh checks if the inward eye of the seeker is open or not.

When with an open inward eye the seeker starts meditation , he sees divine light in a brilliant way
which is very hard to descrbe in words. The veils are removed and you enter into an amazing secret world .

In Naqshbandi sufi order , this meditation starts from the tenth lesson. You can find these steps
in the zipped file available in the following link.
