Exactly, you are not even sure if you 'misdiagnosed' yourself, this is why Tassawuf emphasises on learning from a guide, someone who has the capability to purify you using the Quran and Sunnah.

How would one know if he is on the state of Islam or Ihsaan, the nafs is a very deceptive enemy!

This is such an important Sunnah, and an inherent part of the method on how the Sahabahs learnt the deen, the Quran makes it clear that even the Sahabas who were masters in Arabic and were considered the best of people after the Prophets could not grasp the Kitaab and Hikmaah without a living Guide Sallallahualaiwasalam.
