The Internet in itself is not a fitnah...but it could be a source of fitnah...like many other things we use in daily life.

The person using it could use it positively or negatively...So, at the end of the day, it boils down to the level of taqwa & the fear of Allah the person using it has.

For example , we all have a tongue. Some people use it for backbiting, slandering , lying & abusing others while some people use it for Dhikr, reciiting Qur'an , inviting people towards good.

Just because some people abuse the medium, we shouldn't automatically assume that everyone will also do the same.

Same for internet usage . Not every person wastes hours daily in front of the PC or indulges in haram activities.

That said, parents can make certain conditions when they have the net at home , like kids should have limited exposure online under adult supervision. Asking everyone not to have the net at home is silly.
