Have authentic scholars ever issued a verdict on paan? Does it's ruling (mubah, makruh or haram) depend on the use of tobaco? Is it true, that an Indian king witnessed the miracle of the moon-splitting and then sent Rasulullah 3 gifts and one of them was also paan?

Any useful information would be appreciated.

I would eat paan like a mad man. Ulama differ in opinion from what I got - some say it is haraam. Some say because the tobacco dont give off bad smell its not haraam. If you eat paan before salaat tho u have to brush ur teeth becuz the tobacco does leave a smell on breath - I dont care what tobacco you are using with the rose petals mixed in and all that, no, it leaves a bad smell. I have seen big ulama mashaikh eat paan like chewing gum. Paan is a bad habit though, I dont regret leaving it.
