Beside paan there are "maava" without beetel leaves.
Some people eat maava instead of paan. Whereas few people prefer putting snuff (nasvar) in their mouth.
Bro kashmir have rightly said gujarati are highly addicted to paan, maava and gutkha(manikchand, etc)
Someone asked my friend, why do u eat paan? He replied that sahaba have eaten dry leaves of the tree during their difficult period. Now(he sad laughingly) we being very weak in imaan cannot do such mujahida but wish to imitate sahab's, therefore instead of eating bare leaf we add little chunna, katha, masala, supari etc. so that it become eatable.
Although I eat paan occasionaly but I would not recommend it its a bad habbit.
Infact once when he was in jamate in a village of indonesia. Before making ablution he was cleaning his mouth filled with paan. Since he spat the red liquid of the paan in the wudhukhana, the local brother who was unaware of the paan, started shouting like sheikchilli, blood..... Later on he was told its not blood but paan.
The place where we live have paan shops in huge no.
Try to take a meetha-paan for your wife at least once.
