The reason I ask is because I want to put the emphasis on the sunnah. If I can quote the hadith or practice it comes from with and include it on a note with the dates, then surely this is 'dhikr' as well as I am trying to spread knowledge to the other guests too?

Does that make sense? Yes, we do this practice in Pakistani weddings, but I want to trace where the custom comes from and relate it back to Islam.

Any help genuinely appreciated.

Mufti Salejee has mentioned in his book, "Sunnats" that dates were distributed after the simple Nikah of Hadrat 'Ali and Hadrat Fatima.
