It's a tough question. Especially because nowadays, wearing bottoms below the ankle is a non-issue, it has never been related to pride or anything of that sort. People don't even notice it. So, if you try to justify it along those lines (i.e. it shows that we are too proud), they'll probably ask further uncomfortable questions. As brother NeednoName said, it's best to focus on the Prophet (pbuh) and how we must follow him.
