Assalaamu 'alaykum.
I too would like to add advices of Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat (hafizahullah) regarding attaining the status of wilaayat (special friendship with Allah subhaanahu wata'ala):

Can & Will

“To become a Wali (a special friend of Allah), all that is required is Iman and Taqwaa.
Everyone, regardless of background and walk of life, has the ability to acquire Iman and Taqwaa, and thus become a Wali. Proof of this is that men of Allah can be found in all different fields and professions.

Therefore mentally counsel yourself that you can and you will become a Wali. And ask Allah ta’ala by saying:
‘O Allah, make me your Wali and grant me all the requirements and means to get me there.’

The Greatest Miracle

“The greatest miracle is steadfastness. Manifestations and miracles are not an indication of being a friend of Allah. The great Shaykh Ba Yazid Bustami rahamatullahi alayh states that: Seeing a person do miraculous feats is not a sign of a his being a Wali; following the Sunnah in its entirety is a sign of a Wali"

Friendship with Allah (Part 1)

We should not think to ourselves that Wilayah (close friendship with Allah) is something really special which can only be acquired by scholars of high rank. Each and every person can acquire Wilayah.

Even those who have not yet been blessed with faith have the potential of becoming amongst the greatest friends of Allah.

Shaytaan however deceives us by making us think that Wilayah is something extraordinary and unbelievably difficult to attain. But if we adopt this attitude and give up right from the beginning then will we never get anywhere.

Wilayah is in the reach of each and every person; all that is required is that one exerts the right effort in the right manner. This is why people from every background and profession are found amongst our pious predecessors.

Allah ta’ala created men of Allah in every field in order to demonstrate to us that everyone can become the Wali (friend) of Allah
