True.
Anyone know why this is? I mean, what evidence could possibly be presented in support of this? It's pre-Islam and has no logic. Supporters say they do it because it's hygienic and inhibits a woman's libido but these are both ridiculous to any thinking person. i think one shouldn't jump to conclusions on this issue and one should also draw a distinction between female circumcision and "mutilation".

the practice of female circumcision does have roots among the ansari women (sahabiyat) of madina and was permitted by the prophet (saws).
What does Islam (Holy Quran, Shariah, Hadith) say , if at all, about the female circucision or FGM - Female Genital Mutilation? Is it permissible or not permissible? Thank you

Question

Answer

Assalaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa Barakaatuhu

1. Circumcision for males is Waajib (compulsory) according to Imaam Abu
Hanifa. If circumcision will hinder a person from accepting Islam then
accepting Islam should be given preference over circumcision.
2. It is Mustahabb (commendable) for females to circumcise. It is narrated
in an authentic Hadith quoted from Abu Dawood Shareef that during the
Prophet (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam)'s time there was a woman in Madinah
who used to perform circumsicion for women (Fathul Bari vol. 16 p. 353)
