Thanks for the information. I just googled the same question I had in mind and found this Fatwa in Islamqa. It looks at the issue from a completely different perspective. In summary, according to the scholars on Islamqa its Haram to use earned reward points for your benefit. They come to this conclusion by treating the money deposited into bank accounts as a loan that you are giving to the bank since they use it to do transactions and investments. So in a way when you are using your bank card you are getting back some of your loans, so in essence you cannot gain "benefit" on your loan. If indeeed the money we deposit in banks is a loan to those institutions then it would be Haraam to use the reward points. The devil in the detail is whether the money deposited can be treated as a loan to a bank.
