Part of it is simply ignorance of the proper way to pronounce it, but for others its a sly way to disrespect Muslims - the kuffar have employed this tactic since the time of Rasoolullah when the jewd used to say salma laykum (or something like that) - But it all depends on the individual - you can usually tell when some one is ignorant and when some one is malicious.

I was once on a radio show with a christian and a jew debating Islam and terrorism and what not - and I tried to correct the chrisitian, as he kept saying "alla", 'Muzlum", "Mo - Ham - ed" - when I corrected his pronounciation, he looked at the jew and they laughed and said "no I think we're saying it right' - like there was some kind of inside joke amongst them that they made a pact to purposely pronounce the words incorrectly. I later made a point on the air, that there will be some people on this earth who will never get the blessing of even uttering Allahs divine and blessed name - the christian replied, "I think we all say 'alla' pretty easily" - I replied "who is alla?"
