When the angels said: "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood", this kind of gives a hint that there were beings before Adam PBUH that walked this earth, we do not know them Allah knows them and Adam SAWS came to succeed them... not necessarily humans, it could be Jinn even.

There are probably other explanations.
