If I know how to get rid of the misconception I try to answer. If I do not know then I tell them that ask someone more knowledgable in this. If I know someone more knowledgable in the particular topic then I direct them towards that person.

Above everyone there is a person with more knowledge so no one should feel all sad that 'Oh I don't have knowledge'. As long as you have knowledge of Fard 'Ayn [which is acts and knowledge that every single Muslim should know and learn about [such as learning how to pray and laws related to it]]

I try not to involve my emotions get the better of me in such situations because it does not help me. But this does not mean to approve the opposition's hatred for Islam or to become apologethic Muslims etc,. because we are to be happy about being the followers of Muhammad [peace be upon him] because He is the Greatest Man to have Walked On This Earth and He is Described as a Mercy to Mankind in the Quran.
