What I don't understand why in the sub-Indian continent it is considered Mukruh not to wear the topi, whilst performing salah. Allah knows best as to whether this is true but in some Arab countries, for example Egypt, they go to the other extreme and I have heard that some consider it Mukruh to wear the topi in salah.

It's the sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and of the Sahabah (ra) to wear topi/cover head.
