I think, dr. ati once claimed to have written an email to Shaykh Hamza Yusuf about this issue.

I did sent him a mail regarding it. The explanation that he has come up with now is just a set of diplomatic statements regarding his stance on the Lahori Qayanis. I am sure that if someone translates his various speeches and sent them to the Dar Ul Iftaa of any deobandi madrassah , they will straight away deem him a deviant and a caller towards deviance.
