Every Christian has to constantly compare what they believe and preach against the Bible, which is the only measure of whether something is true or false.
This is dangerous since there are many versions, in many languages, with several generations of translations with limited understanding of the true intent of the original authors. And even then, when the words are agreed to, well respected and credible scholars disagree on the final interpretation.
All that is fine and dandy as long as people realize they are members of a local book club and the local interpretations will vary. It does not make people right or wrong, it only makes them different. A false teacher is then anyone that teaches outside their sphere of influence.
